BUYING YOUR DAUGHTER THEIR FIRST BRA

BRAS FOR TWEENS AND TEENS

We all want our young people to have a positive experience when it comes to bra shopping and feeling confident and good about their bodies. For many teenage girls, or even tween girls, buying a traditional ‘bra’ can be quite daunting and also unnecessary. So many young girls we talk to don’t like wearing ‘normal’ bras as they seem too grown up and old fashioned.

The Bra Lab has developed the Vittoria Bra with tween and teen girls in mind as it’s an ideal ‘first bra’ or ‘starter bra’ that is easy to wear, smooth and seamless as well as comfortable and fun. It’s less daunting than regular bras as it feels buttery soft and fits just like a crop top.

Being a wide-coverage, bandeau-style, wirefree bra, one size will fit a variety of shapes and you don’t have to worry about wires digging in in all the wrong places.

The interchangeable shoulder straps mean young girls can opt for clear shoulder straps for a discreet look, matching black or beige and fun colors such as baby pink, hot pink or white. There is no other bra on the market that has these same strap options for teens.

Here are some tips for parents when it comes to bra shopping for their girls:

  1. Timing Is Everything

It is important to time the purchase of your daughter's first bra correctly. Girls usually start developing breasts between the ages of eight and thirteen. However, every girl is different, and some may develop earlier or later than others. Talk to your daughter about how comfortable she is and let her browse some teen bras with you online. Let her know that her first bra doesn't have to be with the traditional underwire and back clasp that she might have seen you wear. There are many more options available these days for first bras and transition bras.

      2. Comfort Is Key

Comfort is the most crucial factor to consider when buying your daughter her first bra. Make sure to choose a bra that is comfortable, supportive, and fits her properly. A poorly fitting bra can cause discomfort, chafing, and even back pain. Look for bras that are made from soft materials like cotton or cotton/spandex blends stretchy fabrics that can accommodate changes in breast size. Unless your teenager has a significant breast size, we recommend starting with wirefree styles as she will be growing and changing rapidly and these styles accommodate that growth. The Bra Lab’s Vittoria Bra is ideal for this.

     3. Style and Design

There are several styles and designs to choose from when it comes to buying your daughter her first bra. Consider your daughter's needs, lifestyle, and preferences when selecting a style. For example, a sports bra may be a better choice for an active child who enjoys sports or dance, while a padded bra may provide more coverage and support for a child who is more self-conscious. Choose a style that your daughter feels comfortable wearing and that suits her needs. The Bra Lab's Vittoria Bra comes with an ultra light foam padding so that nipples don’t show through and you have a smooth look.

     4. Proper Care

Teach your teenage daughter how to properly care for her bras. Washing and drying bras in the machine can damage the fabric and cause them to lose their shape. Encourage your daughter to hand-wash her bras or use a lingerie bag and wash them on the delicate cycle. Bras should be air-dried rather than placed in the dryer. It is also important to rotate bras and replace them when they no longer fit properly or have become worn out.

     5. Body Positivity

It is crucial to emphasize body positivity and promote a healthy body image when buying your daughter her first bra. Encourage your daughter to embrace her body and the changes that come with puberty. Talk to her about the importance of respecting her body and choosing clothing and undergarments that make her feel comfortable and confident.
